Farming advice needed please! My father has a small property (90 acres) in the SE Qld region. The property has been somewhat neglected the past few years as my parents travelled and a friend kept cattle on the land. It has been heavily overgrazed. After removing the cattle from the property and with all the rain they've experienced recently, they now have a big problem with blady grass. My father is from the 'spray everything with glyphosate' generation, but he’s aware of the damage this causes and knowing I would lose my sh*t if he used it he’s been looking for alternative solutions. He's sought advice locally but is being told by all and sundry to 'wipe' with glyphosate. Surely there is another solution to this problem?! Do you have any advice or can someone point me in the direction of where I can get some advice on natural alternatives to dealing with this? He’s genuinely concerned with doing the right thing and has been learning and reading a lot about soil regeneration but is struggling to get help. Any advice would be hugely appreciated. Best Tuesday news I’ve had in a long time. They’ll try and save face and say it was the economics and the oil price, but the real reason is what you see right here. For every single person who paddled out around the country, and for all you legends down there in the Bight who’ve been fighting this for years, take a moment to fully appreciate what you’ve done. By paddling out and speaking up and fighting this colossally stupid idea, you’ve kept the Bight wild and free and saved it for future generations. Couldn’t be more proud of you mob. Go have a beer. Inspired by @farawayfarmher's idea to celebrate all the little achievements on our journey towards #postitivechange, I've been sharing my Top 5 betterments each week over on my own page ...but thought I'd share them here this week. When overwhelm and feelings of helplessness threaten to take hold it helps to acknowledge these little, positive steps and hopefully, inspire others to make changes in their own lives. If you'd like to join in, please tag #fivebetterments so that we can all cheer each other on 👍🏻 . So here are my Top 5 for the week... 1. I wrote to @woolworths_au letting them know that while I appreciate their efforts to include more and more organic produce on their shelves, as long as they continue to wrap said produce in copious amounts of plastic, I'll continue to not shop at their stores. . 2. I spent a few hours preserving yet another batch of cucumbers this week to go into the winter pantry. While I find it an exhausting job it's also incredibly rewarding watching the shelves start to fill up with goodness. . 3. Instead of throwing out several pairs of the kid’s socks, I sat down and hand stitched the holes, repairing them so that they can be used for another few months (when I'll probably have to do it again). As I was sitting there darning away this image popped into my head of my mother doing the same thing when I was a child - it was a sweet memory I'd apparently forgotten until now. #silverlinings . 4. Our family watched the @2040film together. I’d already seen it, and both of my kids watched it during their first week of school this year. But it had such a positive impact on my son that we decided to watch it as a family so we could talk about it in depth together. (if you haven't watched it yet, please make sure you do!) . 5. Thanks to a recipe shared by Jade from @black_barn_farm I made this 'whatever you've got in the garden or fridge' vegetable tart for lunch today. I adore simple, delicious recipes like this that encourage us to eat seasonally and use what we've got so as to avoid waste. . ~Karen x
